We have reached the midway point between spring and summer.

The days are longer, and spring has officially sprung! It is a magical time of year to see the perennial flowers bloom again and the trees reawaken from their winter slumber. The whole natural world comes alive, and we have been seeing it a lot the past few weeks. We currently have three different birds nesting around our house, and we discovered baby raccoons beneath our deck because we met the momma! This is life in a “treehouse” in the woods, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. My garlic has grown almost a foot tall, and my asparagus has sprouted to the same height as well. My seedlings are getting ready to be transplanted and hardened off to be put in the ground or in planters. I am just starting to see the peas pop out of the ground as well. I also had my first flush of wine cap mushrooms in my mushroom beds. I love this time of year!

I know that with all the influx of light and growth energy, it can sometimes be hard for us to keep up. We can go from being isolated and slower in the winter to all of a sudden feeling the need to hit the ground running in the spring. As soon as the weather is nice, there is an endless list of things to do and achieve. But it is important to pace yourself and give yourself grace if you are not feeling up to the tasks yet. I think this is another reason why anxiety is often higher in the springtime.

In TCM, we are shifting from the wood element of spring (which starts on the Chinese New Year, usually in February) to the fire element, which connects with the heart, small intestine, triple warmer, and pericardium. The emotion can be excitement or anxiousness. Particularly if you are a fire element, it can make this time of year more challenging. It’s compounded for some people by the onslaught of seasonal allergies with everything awakening. I know, for some, this is not their favorite time of year. For me, it is, even if I do sometimes feel more anxiety during this time of year. There is also so much excitement and possibility for what is to unfold. I hope you are doing well with all of the changes and that you are excited for what is to come!
